The Indian Navy has kick started the nuclear propulsion reactor on board its first indigenously-built nuclear submarine INS Arihant, the local media reported.
The move represents a giant step forward in the country’s efforts aimed at boosting its domestic naval capabilities especially when it comes to shipbuilding industry.
Before becoming operational, INS Arihant will deploy for sea trials having in mind that its nuclear reactor has gone critical.
The submarine, unlike its conventional counterparts, is designed in such a way that it can remain in the high seas for considerable periods without having to refuel, it can carry 12 nuclear missiles K-15, along with a medium-range nuclear missile BO-5. The 6,000 tonne vessel was built under the Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project at the Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam.
The push toward building-up its indigenous naval industry has been confirmed also by yesterday’s launching of INS Vikrant, India’s first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in Cochin, Kerala state.
